Inner Self
The major goal of becoming a Christ follower is to allow the Holy Spirit to work in their life to such a degree that their character begins to take the shape of the character of Jesus. As our heart, our inner self, is transformed it will begin to express His desires through our attitudes, choices and actions. What happens within the believer is what drives the believer. If the inner self remains largely untouched, then the actions of Christian will be extremely inconsistent and the name of Christ will suffer damage.
Now this is not to say that a Christ follower must be perfect. No, the transformation of the inner being is a life long process. Like an infant growing to adulthood, we must learn how to live life. Mistakes will be made. But as it has been said, "God is not interest in our perfection, near as much as He is our direction." The goal is to see progress in our development toward Christlike character. This occurs as we create space in our life for the Holy Spirit to do his work. Transformation is not something we can accomplish, only the Spirit can do that work. Our task is to place ourselves in a submissive attitude that will edge him out of lives. We must release control of our life and give him full control. Then and only then can the transformation process bear fruit.
